Many Parisian buildings have pipes older than your grandparents. If yours are failing, we replace them efficiently with minimal disruption — clear timeline, fixed quote, clean workmanship.

Pricing

Pipe Repair & Replacement in Paris: 100 - 2000 EUR per repair. Typical duration: 1-4 hours. Full quote provided before work begins.

Common Risks

  • Lead pipe contamination in pre-1950 buildings
  • Galvanized steel pipe corrosion reducing water quality
  • Pipe joint failures in old Haussmannian plumbing stacks
  • Frozen pipe bursts during cold snaps

What Happens When Our Plumber Arrives

  1. 1

Establish what the pipe is made of

Copper, lead, galvanised steel, PER and multilayer all fail differently and all need a different repair. In a Paris flat you can meet three of them in a single run, so identifying the material at the failure point comes before anything else.

  2. 2

Decide between repairing and replacing the section

A single split in sound pipe is a joint repair. A pipe that has failed because the material is at the end of its life will fail again beside the repair, and in that case replacing the run is the cheaper decision even though it quotes higher.

  3. 3

Open up only where we have to

Chasing a wall and making it good is normally most of the cost on this work, so the route matters. Where a run can be re-laid in a boxing, under a bath panel or along an existing chase, we do that rather than cutting a new channel.

  4. 4

    Pressure test before closing anything

The repair is tested while it is still visible. Closing a wall over an untested joint is how a repair becomes a second, worse leak inside new plaster.

Paris Pipework, Layer by Layer

A central Paris flat rarely has one generation of pipework. The original lead was replaced piecemeal with copper over decades, then renovations added PER or multilayer where kitchens and bathrooms moved. The joints between generations are the weak points, both because dissimilar metals corrode where they meet and because those junctions were often made in awkward places nobody expected to revisit.

Residual lead is worth naming plainly. Lead supply pipe was used widely in older Paris buildings and, where a length remains on a drinking-water run, replacing it is worth doing on its own account rather than waiting for it to leak. We flag it when we find it.

Then there is the copropriété line. The riser serving the building is collective; the branch inside your flat is yours. On a repair that straddles the two, the syndic has to be involved, and knowing which side the failure is on before work starts is what stops a dispute about the invoice afterwards.

Call us straight away if

  • A pipe has split and you cannot isolate it at a valve
  • Water is tracking into a neighbouring flat
  • A pipe has frozen and you have no water on that run
  • A supply pipe is visibly corroded and weeping at a joint

It can wait for a booked slot if

  • A joint shows green staining but is dry to the touch
  • A pipe knocks when a tap closes but does not leak

What Decides the Price

The 35 EUR call-out and diagnostic applies and is deducted from the invoice if you accept the quote.

A single accessible joint or a short exposed section is at the lower end of the range.

Re-running a buried section, or repiping a bathroom or kitchen, sits at the top, and most of that figure is opening up, re-laying and making good rather than the pipe itself.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I still have lead pipes, and does it matter?

Lead supply pipe was used widely in older Paris buildings and lengths of it survive in flats that were never fully re-plumbed. It is dull grey, soft enough to mark with a fingernail and has swollen wiped joints rather than soldered ones. Where a lead section is on a drinking-water run, replacing it is worth doing deliberately rather than waiting for a leak, and we point it out whenever we find one.

Can you repair the pipe without opening the wall?

Where the failure is accessible, in a boxing, under a bath panel or in a cupboard, yes. Where it is buried in a wall or under a screed, the pipe has to be reached, and we quote for opening up and making good so that the full cost is visible before you decide. Rerouting the run in an accessible line is sometimes cheaper than chasing out the original.

Who pays if the leak is on the building's riser?

A shared riser is the copropriété's responsibility and the syndic arranges the work; the branch pipework inside your flat is yours. Our first job on that kind of leak is to establish which side of the line the failure is on, in writing, because that is what decides who is billed.

My pipes bang when I turn a tap off. Is something about to fail?

That is water hammer, caused by the flow stopping abruptly, and the usual culprits are a fast-closing appliance valve or pipework that has lost a clip and can move. It is not an imminent burst, but the repeated shock does work joints loose over time, so it is worth fixing on a planned visit rather than ignoring.

A pipe froze this winter. What should I do?

Do not apply a naked flame. Close the nearest isolating valve upstream, open the tap the run feeds so there is somewhere for water to go as it thaws, and warm the pipe gently along its length. Then have it looked at, because a pipe that has frozen once has often been stretched at a joint and will weep when the pressure returns.
