What Happens When Our Plumber Arrives
- 1
Identify the cartridge, not just the tap
Nearly every modern mixer fails at the ceramic cartridge inside it, and cartridges are not interchangeable between makes. Establishing which one it takes is the job; fitting it is quick.
- 2
Check whether it is the tap or the pressure
A weak shower is often not the shower. A blocked aerator, a scaled shower head, a partly closed isolating valve, or low pressure on the building's riser all present identically at the outlet, and only one of them is fixed by replacing the mixer.
- 3
Deal with the seals while it is apart
If a tap is open on the bench, the seals and the aerator are cheap to renew and they are what fails next. Doing them at the same time avoids a second call-out for the same fitting.
- 4
Check the isolating valves
Old service valves in Paris flats seize in the open position, which is discovered at the worst possible moment. Where we find one that will not turn, we say so, because replacing it during a planned visit costs a great deal less than discovering it during a burst.
Taps, Showers and Paris Water
Hard water is the common factor behind almost everything we are called out for on taps and showers. It scales the aerator so the flow scatters, it furs the shower head so half the jets close, and it wears ceramic cartridges so mixers drip and go stiff. None of it is a sign of a cheap fitting; it is simply what this water does to fittings over time.
Pressure is the other Paris-specific issue. Upper floors of tall buildings without a boosting pump sit at the end of a long riser, and the shower on the sixth floor genuinely does deliver less than the one on the second. When a guest reports a weak shower we check that before condemning the mixer, because replacing a perfectly good mixer changes nothing.
Fittings in rented flats also tend to be a mix of ages: a recent basin mixer next to a bath filler from a previous refit, with isolating valves that may predate both. That is why we look at the valves as well as the tap, since the valve is what lets the next repair be done without draining the flat.
Call us straight away if
- A tap will not shut off and water is running continuously
- Water is escaping from the wall or the pedestal rather than the spout
- An isolating valve has failed while open and you cannot stop the supply to a leaking fitting
It can wait for a booked slot if
- A tap drips slowly and shuts off when closed firmly
- A shower head is scattering or delivering less than it did
- A mixer is stiff but still controls temperature
What Decides the Price
The flat 35 EUR call-out and diagnostic applies and is deducted if you accept the quote.
A cartridge, a set of seals or an aerator is at the lower end of the range and covers most dripping taps.
Replacing a mixer, a bath filler or a concealed shower valve sits higher, and a concealed valve costs more again because the wall has to be opened and made good.

Frequently Asked Questions
My shower pressure is weak. Do I need a new shower?
Usually not. Check the shower head first, since limescale closes the jets and a head can often be soaked clean. After that the likely causes are a partly closed isolating valve, a scaled hose, or genuinely low pressure on the building riser if you are on an upper floor. A new mixer fixes none of those, which is why we check them before quoting one.
Can a dripping tap really be worth a call-out?
It is worth fixing, and it is a small job: the cause is nearly always a worn ceramic cartridge or a perished seal. Left alone, a drip wears the seat it is running over, and a repair that was a cartridge becomes a replacement mixer. It also runs continuously onto a water bill.
Do you have parts for my brand of tap?
We carry cartridges and seals for the makes common in Paris flats. Cartridges are specific to the make and often to the model, so a photograph of the tap, and of any name on the body or the handle, sent when you call is the fastest way to have the right part arrive with the plumber.
The mixer has gone very stiff. Is that scale?
Almost always. Scale builds on the ceramic discs inside the cartridge, and the handle stiffens before it eventually starts dripping or losing temperature control. It is a cartridge replacement rather than a new tap in most cases.
Can you replace a concealed shower valve without retiling the bathroom?
Sometimes, if the new valve matches the footprint of the old one and the access plate can be reused. Often it needs a section of tile removed to reach the body, and we quote for opening up and making good as part of the job so the cost is not a surprise afterwards.
