No Hot Water in Paris? Here Is Why and What to Do
Why There Is No Hot Water in Your Paris Apartment
Waking up to cold water in a Paris apartment is surprisingly common, especially for visitors. The French hot water system works differently from many other countries, and the cause could be anything from a simple timer setting to a broken heating element. This guide covers every scenario so you can fix it yourself or know when to call for help.
The "Heures Creuses" Timer System
Many French electric water heaters (called a cumulus or ballon d'eau chaude) only heat water during off-peak hours -- typically between 10 PM and 6 AM. This is a national energy-saving measure called heures creuses. If you used all the hot water during the day, it will not refill until after 10 PM. Look for a switch near your breaker box labeled AUTO / 1 / 0. Set it to "1" to force the water heater to heat immediately.
Check the Circuit Breaker
Your breaker box (tableau electrique) is usually near the front door. Look for a switch that may have flipped to a middle position -- this means it tripped. Flip it back up. If it trips again immediately, there is an electrical fault and you need a professional. The water heater circuit is often labeled "chauffe-eau" or "cumulus."
Gas Water Heater Issues
Some older Paris apartments have gas water heaters (chauffe-eau gaz). These have a small pilot light that can go out from drafts, gas supply interruptions, or a faulty thermocouple. You can often see whether the pilot light is lit through a small window on the unit. If the pilot is out, do NOT try to relight it yourself -- gas water heaters require professional handling. Call us and we will fix it safely.
Building-Wide Hot Water
Some Paris buildings have collective hot water (eau chaude collective) where hot water is produced centrally and distributed to all apartments. If this system fails, it affects everyone. Check with your neighbors or the building concierge before calling a plumber -- if the whole building is affected, the syndic (property management) handles the repair.
The Tank Ran Out
French water heater tanks are typically 100-200 liters. In a rental with multiple guests, the tank can empty faster than expected. If you have hot water in the morning but it runs out quickly, the tank may simply be too small for the number of people. Let it refill for 4-6 hours (or switch to forced heating mode) and it should recover.
When to Call a Plumber
Call us if: the breaker keeps tripping, the pilot light will not stay lit, you have forced heating and still no hot water after 3 hours, you hear unusual sounds from the water heater, or you see water leaking from the unit. These indicate a mechanical failure that needs professional repair. We carry parts for all major brands and most repairs are completed same day.
