Common Risks

  • Constantly running toilet wasting hundreds of liters daily
  • Toilet overflow causing water damage
  • Cracked toilet bowl or tank leaking
  • Faulty flush mechanisms in older French models

What Happens When Our Plumber Arrives

  1. 1

Separate a blockage from a mechanism fault

A bowl that fills and drains slowly is a blockage. A bowl that does not fill, or a cistern that never stops running, is the mechanism. They look equally alarming and have nothing in common, so this is the first thing we establish.

  2. 2

Identify the model before opening it

French cisterns vary far more than the buttons suggest, and concealed wall-hung frames from Geberit, Grohe and Siamp each take their own flush valve and fill valve. Getting the model right is the difference between a part from the van and a second visit.

  3. 3

Replace the part rather than the toilet

A flush valve, a fill valve, a flush seal or a button plate is almost always the failure, and almost always replaceable on its own. Full replacement is for cracked ceramic and for frames that no longer have parts available.

  4. 4

    Test it properly before leaving

We run it through several full cycles and check that the cistern stops filling and the seal holds, because a toilet that has been running quietly for months is the kind of fault that is easy to declare fixed too early.

French Toilets, and Why They Confuse Visitors

The wall-hung toilet with a concealed cistern is standard in renovated Paris flats, and it hides everything that can go wrong behind a tiled panel with a button plate on it. When it fails there is no visible tank to look into, which is why guests so often conclude that the toilet is broken when the actual fault is a five-euro seal behind the plate.

Dual-flush buttons are the other source of confusion. The two halves deliver different volumes, and when the mechanism jams it frequently jams on the small flush, so the toilet appears to work but never clears properly. Pressing harder does not help and can break the plate.

Hard water is the underlying cause in a large share of what we attend. Scale builds on the flush valve seal and on the fill valve, and once either is furred the cistern either leaks continuously into the bowl or refuses to refill. In a rental that runs unattended between guests, that slow leak can go unnoticed for weeks.

Call us straight away if

  • The bowl is close to overflowing
  • Water is escaping from the base of the pan onto the floor
  • It is the only toilet in the property and it does not flush at all
  • The cistern is running continuously and the valve will not shut it off

It can wait for a booked slot if

  • The flush is weak but clears the bowl
  • The seat or the button plate is loose but the mechanism works

What Decides the Price

The flat 35 EUR call-out and diagnostic applies, deducted from the invoice if you go ahead.

Replacing a fill valve, flush valve or seal is at the lower end of the range and is most of what we do.

A concealed frame costs more to work on because the panel has to be opened and closed again, and a full replacement sits at the top of the range.

Frequently Asked Questions

The button does nothing. Is the toilet broken?

Often not. On a concealed wall-hung cistern the button plate operates a pneumatic or mechanical linkage to the flush valve, and the linkage disconnecting is a common and inexpensive fault. In the meantime, if the cistern has water in it you can flush manually by pouring a bucket of water briskly into the bowl.

My toilet runs constantly. Does it matter if I leave it?

It matters financially. A continuously running toilet is one of the largest avoidable items on a Paris water bill, and the usual cause is a flush valve seal that scale has stopped sealing, which is a small part. Leaving it also keeps water moving through a valve that is already failing.

Do you carry parts for French toilet models?

We carry fill valves, flush valves and seals for the models common in Paris flats, including the concealed Geberit, Grohe and Siamp frames found in most renovations. Tell us on the phone whether the toilet is wall-hung with a button plate or a standard cistern, and if you can, send a photograph of the plate; it lets us bring the right part first time.

Can a blocked toilet be cleared without removing the pan?

In most cases yes. The blockage is usually in the trap or just beyond it, and rods or a drain machine reach it. Removing and refitting the pan is reserved for a foreign object lodged where nothing can reach it, and we would tell you before doing it because it changes the price.

Should I pour boiling water down the toilet to unblock it?

No. Boiling water can crack a ceramic pan, and a cracked pan turns a blockage into a replacement. Very hot water from the tap is safe for a basin or kitchen sink, but not for the toilet.
