Bad Smell From Drains in Paris? We Diagnose and Fix Same Day
Sewer smells in Paris apartments are surprisingly common, especially in older buildings. The cause is almost always straightforward -- a dry trap, a partial blockage, or a worn seal. We find it fast and fix it the same visit.
What to Do Right Now
Follow these steps while you wait for our plumber to arrive:
Run water in every drain
Pour water into every sink, shower, and floor drain. Dry P-traps are the most common cause -- running water for 30 seconds refills the water seal that blocks sewer gas.
Check if it is one drain or all
If only one drain smells, the issue is local (blockage or broken seal). If all drains smell, it may be a building-wide sewer vent problem.
Open windows for ventilation
Sewer gas contains methane and hydrogen sulfide. While not typically dangerous in small amounts, it is unpleasant and can cause headaches. Ventilate well.
Call us for a proper diagnosis
We use drain cameras to find the exact cause. Most sewer smell issues are fixed same day once the source is identified.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my flat smell of drains when nothing is blocked?
Almost always a dry trap. Every waste fitting holds a small water seal that blocks sewer gas, and when a shower, a floor gully or a spare basin goes unused for a week or two that water evaporates and the seal is gone. It is the single most common cause in holiday flats and rentals between guests.
How do I fix a dry trap myself?
Run the tap or the shower for about thirty seconds. That refills the trap and the smell normally goes within the hour. For a floor gully or a fitting with no tap over it, pour a litre of water straight down it. If the smell returns within a day or two, the seal is being pulled out by something else and is worth looking at.
The smell comes back every time. What then?
A seal that keeps disappearing is usually being siphoned out by another fixture discharging, which points at a venting problem on the waste run, or the trap is cracked and leaking slowly. Both are common in flats where a kitchen or bathroom was moved during a renovation. That needs the run looked at rather than more water poured down it.
Could the smell be coming from the building rather than my flat?
It can. A blockage or a venting fault in the shared stack pushes sewer gas back into the flats connected to it, typically the lowest ones first. If neighbours report the same thing at the same time, it is the building's problem and the syndic should be told.
Is drain smell dangerous?
Sewer gas is unpleasant and, in an unventilated room over a long period, not something to live with. It is not an emergency in the way a leak is. Refill the traps, ventilate the room, and get the waste run checked if the smell keeps returning.
