Blocked Toilet in Paris? Cleared Fast by English-Speaking Plumber
A blocked toilet is embarrassing but incredibly common -- especially for visitors who are not used to the narrower sewer pipes in Parisian buildings. Our plumbers handle this discreetly and professionally, dozens of times per week.
What to Do Right Now
Follow these steps while you wait for our plumber to arrive:
Do not flush repeatedly
A blocked toilet can overflow if you keep flushing. Try once, and if the water rises instead of draining, stop.
Wait 15-20 minutes
Sometimes a soft blockage will partially dissolve on its own. If the water level drops after waiting, try one more flush. If it rises, stop.
Try a plunger if you have one
Use a flange plunger (the kind with an extra cup at the bottom) for toilets. Regular flat plungers do not create a proper seal on French toilet bowls.
Call us for professional unblocking
We use professional tools that clear blockages without damaging your pipes. Most blocked toilets are cleared in under 30 minutes.

Tip for Guests
French plumbing cannot handle thick toilet paper or any wipes -- even those labeled "flushable." Use thin French toilet paper and throw everything else in the bin. If the Airbnb does not provide a bin next to the toilet, ask your host for one.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I stop it overflowing while I wait?
Stop flushing, and close the small isolating valve on the pipe feeding the cistern, normally just behind or beside the toilet. If there is no valve, lift the cistern lid and hold the flush valve closed. Once no more water can enter the bowl, the level cannot rise further.
Will a plunger work on a French toilet?
Often yes, as long as you wait for the level to settle and cover the outlet completely. Push and pull steadily rather than hard. If a few attempts change nothing, stop: the blockage is beyond the trap and needs rods or a drain machine.
What blocks toilets most often in Paris flats?
Wet wipes and sanitary products head the list by a wide margin, including ones marketed as flushable, because they do not break up. After that come excess paper and objects dropped from a shelf above the pan. In older buildings, limescale narrowing the waste run makes any of those far more likely to lodge.
Could it be the building rather than my toilet?
If other fixtures in the flat are also backing up, or neighbours report the same thing, yes: the shared waste stack is blocked, and that is the copropriété's responsibility. Clearing your own trap will not help in that case, which is why we check the other fixtures before starting.
Is it safe to use chemical unblockers in a toilet?
No. They work poorly on the usual causes, they are hazardous in a bowl that might overflow, and they leave a caustic pool for whoever works on the pan next. Tell us if any have already been used.
