Plumbing Problem in Your Paris Airbnb: Guest Guide

Do Not Panic -- You Have Options

You are on holiday in Paris, and suddenly the toilet will not flush, water is pooling on the floor, or there is no hot water. Your host is not responding. You do not speak French. This guide tells you exactly what to do, step by step, so you can get back to enjoying your trip.

Step 1: Assess the Severity

Is water actively flowing, leaking, or flooding? If yes, this is an emergency -- skip to the emergency section below. If the issue is a clogged drain, no hot water, or a broken fixture, it is urgent but not critical. You have time to follow these steps in order.

If Water Is Actively Flooding

Find the main water shut-off valve -- usually under the kitchen sink. Turn it clockwise to close. If water is near electrical outlets, go to the breaker box (usually near the front door) and switch off the main breaker. Then call us immediately at +33 1 80 85 63 90. We will talk you through everything while our plumber races to your location.

Step 2: Document Everything

Take photos and video of the problem. Note the date and time. This documentation protects you in three ways: it proves the issue existed before your check-out (protecting your deposit), it supports any Airbnb claim for refund or rebooking, and it gives the plumber useful information before arriving.

Step 3: Contact Your Host

Message your host through the Airbnb app (this creates an official record) with photos of the problem. Explain what happened clearly. Most hosts respond quickly to plumbing issues because they know the damage gets worse with time. But if your host does not respond within 30 minutes for an urgent issue, move to the next step.

Step 4: Call Us Directly

You do not need your host's permission to call a plumber for an urgent issue. Call Plumbers.fr at +33 1 80 85 63 90 or WhatsApp us. We speak English, arrive in under 30 minutes in central Paris, and we coordinate billing with your host afterward. You should not have to pay for plumbing repairs in a rental -- that is the owner's responsibility under French law.

Who Pays for the Plumber?

Under French rental law, the property owner is responsible for maintaining plumbing infrastructure. This means your host pays for: burst pipes, broken water heaters, faulty flush mechanisms, blocked main drains, and any plumbing that was already in poor condition. The only time a guest might be responsible is if they caused obvious damage -- such as flushing large objects down the toilet. We handle billing directly with your host in almost every case.

Getting a Refund from Airbnb

If the plumbing issue makes your rental uninhabitable (no working toilet, no water, or active flooding), you may be eligible for a refund or rebooking under Airbnb's Guest Refund Policy. Report the issue through the Airbnb app within 72 hours of discovery. Include your photos, our repair report, and a clear description. If the host is unresponsive, Airbnb customer support can intervene.

Quick Tips to Avoid Problems

French plumbing is different from what you may be used to. Use thin French toilet paper only -- never flush wipes, even flushable ones. Do not put grease or food waste down the kitchen sink. The dual-flush toilet buttons mean small flush (half button) and big flush (full button). If the shower has no pressure, the shower head is probably clogged with limescale -- try unscrewing it and running water directly.
